Teeth plates

Teeth plates

Teeth plates are removable and non-removable orthodontic structures for aligning teeth, which are made of polymeric materials (polyurethane, silicone) and wire and are fixed on the teeth with hooks and braces. The principle of operation of such devices is that they exert gentle pressure on the dentition or its individual parts, thereby correcting the bite. Need to regularly correct the pressure exerted by the plates.

Teeth straightening plates are an effective means of eliminating orthodontic defects at the age of 6-15 years. If you find a problem in time and turn to a specialist, you can do without long-term treatment with braces or surgery.

What are dental plates?

The standard bite correction plate is a removable structure made of soft resin material and wire. It is fixed on the lower or upper jaw, the process of its installation is simpler than braces, and they get used to it much faster.

The orthodontic structure includes the following elements:

  • Body (base). Made of plastic or silicone, flexible enough yet durable. There are transparent, colored or patterned overlays.
  • Metal arc. It is fixed on the teeth and exerts a forceful effect on the teeth, due to which the correction takes place.
  • Bertoni screw. It is used to change the size of the plate, correction pressure on the palate, teeth, gums, jaws.
  • Key. With its help, you can tighten the screw, which allows you to increase the load and expand the base of the plate.

Plates for bite correction: main types

In pediatric and adult dentistry, several types of plates are used to correct anomalies in the growth of teeth and occlusion in children who expand their jaws.

Depending on the design, the following types of devices are distinguished:

  • 1
    removable;
  • 2
    non-removable;
  • 3
    on the lower and upper teeth.

The wearing of the plates is easier for children, because in case of discomfort the child can always remove them or adjust the pressure of the spring head. At the initial stages of treatment, the child may experience pain, diction may be disturbed, but all this goes away within a few days.

The plate on the teeth should be worn for at least 12 hours a day, depending on the indications – this is the only way to achieve the desired effect. An exception are Andresen-Goypl activators, which are worn only at night. Such constructions deprive the child of the opportunity to speak and breathe through the mouth and are used to treat distal occlusion. In the same category, you can include all kinds of trays that are also used during sleep.

Most often, the Bruckl apparatus is used to correct anomalies in the dentition, including mesial occlusion. Its use is possible in both children and adults. The Frenkel apparatus is no less effective. The removable plates on the teeth can be twisted independently, and the fixed plates are tightened by the orthodontist during the next examination.

Indications for wearing records

Wearing dental records is indicated in the following cases:

  • to prevent tooth displacement;
  • if necessary to correct the width of the sky;
  • to correct anomalies in the growth of teeth (to align the front teeth, move dystopic canines, etc.);
  • if it is necessary to change the shape of the jaw bones;
  • to stimulate or slow down the growth of the jaws.

The bite is formed before the age of 15, so it is very important to monitor this process in the following periods:

  • the first 6 months after birth;
  • from six months to 3 years – while milk teeth are growing;
  • from 3 to 6 years old – when the jaws grow and the change of milk teeth begins with permanent ones (during this period, a temporary bite is formed);
  • from 6 to 12 years old – when a mixed bite is formed (the presence of milk and permanent teeth in the mouth);
  • from 12 to 15 years – the final formation of the bite.

Look for the following signs of a malocclusion:

  • 1
    incorrectly closing dentition;
  • 2
    protruding lower jaw;
  • 3
    curvature of the teeth;
  • 4
    protrusion of the upper lip.

Any of the listed violations require immediate contact with an orthodontist.

Advantages of treatment with plates

This method of bite correction and teeth alignment has a number of advantages:

  • a simple and fairly quick way to solve orthodontic problems, for example, wearing a structure allows you to eliminate the diastema in a few months;
  • comfort in treatment, since the orthodontic plate for correcting the occlusion is a removable structure, which facilitates the care of the oral cavity and the apparatus itself;
  • safety for enamel;
  • fast production – usually it takes 1-2 weeks;
  • hypoallergenic materials that are safe for human health;
  • availability – the cost of the plates is at least 2 times lower than that of classic braces.

How the plates are installed

Treatment with the use of plates is the following mandatory steps:

  • Initial examination and consultation, during which the orthodontist detects malocclusion defects, determines the methods of treatment.
  • An X-ray and an impression of the jaw are taken.
  • A plaster matrix is made from the impression.
  • A fitting is performed and, if there are no problems, a dental plate is made.
  • Installation of the structure is performed – it takes about 10 minutes, and most of the time is spent on adapting the device to the patient’s dentition. The procedure is completely painless, therefore it is performed without anesthesia.

At the end of the admission stage, the doctor talks about the basic rules that must be followed during treatment (oral hygiene, care for devices), and sets the date for the next visit to the clinic.
