Orthodontic dentistry

Orthodontic treatment is the correction of any malocclusion that is statistically present in 8 out of 10 people. The easiest way is to eliminate a defect in the development of the dentoalveolar apparatus in childhood. But modern dentistry has effective teeth straightening techniques that are effective even for adults, regardless of the complexity of the pathology.

If you want to have beautiful, healthy and even teeth, contact the Amel Dental Clinic. We offer you modern bite correction systems made in the USA and Germany, we use digital technologies for planning and modeling of ortho structures, and we solve the whole range of dental problems.

How can teeth be aligned? Modern methods of bite correction

The correct development of the dentition implies a symmetrical arrangement of the teeth, the absence of gaps between the teeth, a slight protrusion of the incisors of the upper row over the lower ones when the jaws are closed. Defects in the structure of the bite are not only about beauty, and even not only about dental health. Violations in the development of the masticatory apparatus are fraught with complications such as impaired diction, digestive problems, head and facial pains, dizziness, difficulty breathing during sleep and snoring, the development of osteochondrosis.

Depending on the characteristics of the disturbance in the formation of the dentoalveolar apparatus, different types of bite develop:

  • deep – the incisors of the upper row overlap the lower ones by half and deeper (at a rate of 1/3);
  • distal – when the upper jaw protrudes strongly forward;
  • mesial – on the contrary, the lower jaw is more developed and strongly protrudes forward;
  • cross – teeth move relative to each other;
  • open – when the jaws are closed, space remains between the teeth of the upper and lower dentition;

There can be two solutions to the problem:

  • 1
    Surgical.
  • 2
    Non-surgical.

Surgical correction is resorted to only in the case of serious pathologies in the development of the jaws, clear asymmetry of the face, non-closure of the lips, chin dysplasia and other anomalies. Under certain conditions, orthodontic treatment is prescribed after surgery.

The non-surgical method is a bite correction using orthodontic systems. Modern orthodontic designs can correct any of the listed defects.

When are dental braces placed?

Braces of the system are braces that are fixed on the teeth and connected to each other by a metal arc. The alignment of the dentition occurs precisely due to the fastening arc – it creates pressure, under which the teeth gradually move and take the desired position.

With the help of braces in dentistry they perform:

  • 1
    moving teeth (one tooth or several teeth, returning to the place of protruding canines);
  • 2
    restoration of symmetry (alignment of the center of the upper jaw teeth in relation to the lower teeth);
  • 3
    elimination of three, diastemas;
  • 4
    pulling teeth in case of teething problems;
  • 5
    elimination of defects caused by the loss of one or more teeth;
  • 6
    correction of bite anomalies.

Braces system: types, features and benefits

All bracket systems work according to the same principle, however, there are many types of braces, which differ in design, manufacturing technology, materials, and have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Varieties of braces according to the method of arch fixation

Ligature.

This is a classic system where the fastening of the staple to the arc is performed using ligatures (elastic bands). The peculiarity of treatment with ligature braces is a strong pressure on the teeth, the need to adjust the position of the arch every month, since it remains motionless when the position of the teeth is changed, large protruding elements that are visible to others and create inconvenience for the patient.

Ligature-free or self-ligating.

The main feature and advantage of the system is the absence of ligatures. The arch is movable, so the pressure on the teeth is moderate, and the system itself does not need frequent adjustments. Visually, self-ligating braces are more attractive, they are not striking, and bite correction with their help is faster.

By installation method

Braces are divided into:

  • 1
    vestibular – have a classic design (locks and arch on the front, outer side of the teeth);
  • 2
    lingual – placement of braces on the inside of the dentition.

Each type of system has its own advantages and disadvantages. So, the minus of vestibular braces is that they are visible, which can make the patient feel awkward and uncomfortable. However, thanks to modern materials, it was possible to achieve the maximum compactness of the plates and to make the braces unobtrusive. The system benefits from easy installation and no hygiene problems.

The lingual system is completely invisible to others. For many, this is a determining factor, because bite correction does not occur quickly, and during the months of wearing braces, a person can have important events in life when he wants to look attractive. A fly in the ointment for the lingual system is the complexity of the design, difficulties in caring for the oral cavity.

In both options, spring braces can be used. The spring is needed to open or close the cavity between the teeth (the springs in this case will be different).

The difference between braces by material

Speaking about the difference in materials, we mean the difference in the manufacture of staples, since the base of the system (arc) is always made of nitinol. If you’ve seen a tooth-colored system, it means the metal wire has been stained.

According to the material, ortho structures are:

  • 1
    metal (titanium) – the advantage of such systems is their low cost, but they are not suitable for people who are prone to metal allergies;
  • 2
    made of gold-plated metal – gold plating makes the design hypoallergenic, the cost of such braces is higher;
  • 3
    plastic – the most inexpensive type of bracket systems, but plastic plates very quickly lose their presentable appearance, absorbing dyes from food, therefore they are suitable for short-term treatment;
  • 4
    ceramic – very durable, aesthetic and almost invisible plates, which are painted in a shade of natural enamel or slightly lighter to create the effect of whitening teeth;
  • 5
    sapphire – in their manufacture, medical synthesized stones are used that are not susceptible to contamination, emphasize the whiteness of the teeth, and many consider the brilliance of crystals to be a stylish addition to practicality.

Combined systems are also used – for example, ceramic braces can be placed on the teeth of the upper dentition and metal braces can be installed on the lower jaw. Ceramic systems are more expensive than metal ones, and the combination of materials is aesthetics + economy.

The choice of the brace material does not affect the functionality of the bracket system. This is primarily a matter of attractiveness.

How are teeth straightened with braces?

The usual orthodontic treatment regimen looks like this:

1. Diagnostics.

Our clinic uses the most informative method of bite diagnostics – 3D scanning, which allows you to get a complete picture of the structure of the dentition and the entire dentoalveolar system, to reveal the slightest deviations in the growth of teeth, occlusion, and development of joints. Based on the results of the diagnosis, the doctor consults and offers available ways to correct the bite.

2. Preparation for alignment of the dentition.

If necessary, at this stage, healthy teeth are removed to expand the dentition, and caries is treated.

3. Making braces.

The most accurate and functional CAD / CAM technology is used for modeling and manufacturing of orthodontic structures. Braces are manufactured in our laboratory.

4. Installation of braces.

This is a multi-stage process that takes about 1.5 hours. Before the immediate fixation, professional teeth cleaning and drying, antiseptic treatment and again rinsing and drying are performed. After preparation, a composite orthodontic adhesive is applied to each tooth for fixation and each bracket is installed on its own tooth. Then, to fix the structure, the glue is subjected to polymerization (hardening under the influence of light from a polymerization lamp). Finally, the orthodontist removes the excess glue.

5. Directly treatment.

It can take up to 2 years to wear braces. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the pathology. Throughout the entire period of correcting the patient’s bite, dentistry waits every 1-3 months, the orthodontist evaluates the results, performs dynamic correction of the system (replacement of the arch). Each time, a more rigid arch is established, which contributes to the movement of the teeth, and the correction of the bite.

6. Removing the braces system.

The time of removal is determined by the dentist orthodontist. He removes arcs and locks, performs hygienic cleaning of the oral cavity and, if necessary, dental treatment after wearing braces.

7. Retention period.

Orthodontic treatment does not end with the removal of braces. After the bite is corrected with braces, the teeth remain mobile for some time. To prevent them from returning to their previous position, it is necessary for some time (from several months to a year) to wear retainers (retention plate apparatus or retention mouthguards). With the completion of this stage, the correction course ends.

Other methods of teeth straightening

In this case, the doctor offers alternative options for correcting the bite:

  • 1
    Veneers are used to correct minor irregularities in the structure of the dentition, increase the size of too short teeth, and hide various defects (a small cavity between the teeth). Veneers, unlike braces, do not cure, but hide flaws, therefore, they are used in orthodontics only if the bite defect does not adversely affect dental health.
  • 2
    Trainers are elastic and rigid pads resembling boxing mouthguards, which allow you to slightly correct the bite. They are used only at night, since it is impossible to talk to them. Due to inconsistent wearing, the treatment may take a long time.
  • 3
    Aligners are comfortable, invisible pads suitable for around-the-clock wearing (removed only during meals). During the course, up to 20 aligners are replaced. The design change takes place approximately every 2 weeks. This method is suitable for correcting small deviations in tooth growth.
