Alignment aligners

Alignment aligners

A dental mouthguard, or aligner for teeth, is a removable plate that is used in pediatric and adult dentistry to align the dentition or correct the bite. The material for the manufacture of the mouthguard is medical silicone, and outwardly the device resembles a cover – a cover for teeth. Dental clinic Amel Dental Clinic offers aligners for teeth straightening in Dnipro – an effective and proven method, which was first described back in 1945.

The method of treatment using dental positioners, which later became known as aligners, was first described by Dr. Kesling (USA) back in 1945. At that time it was a revolutionary idea, but from a technical point of view, its implementation was impossible.

Tooth aligners: what are their benefits?

So, first of all, the aligners allow you to correct the bite and align the dentition completely unnoticed by others. We do this with the help of invisible, transparent and very thin Invisalign guards, which are developed by specialists from the USA. This is not just one of the most significant achievements of orthodontics, but also a real work of art.

The main advantages of aligners:

  • With their help, you can eliminate problems that even braces cannot cope with. This applies to defects in molars or molars, which are very difficult to access. Invisalign aligners are simply irreplaceable in this case.
  • Treatment with aligners can be carried out even if your teeth and gums are not entirely healthy, i.e. you can start correcting the occlusion already at the stage of treating other diseases of the oral cavity.
  • Aligners can be installed in just 30 minutes.
  • Dental aligners follow the shape of the dentition, therefore they do not cause discomfort. They are made by computer modeling by experienced orthodontists.
  • This unique transparent dental plate is significantly cheaper than the popular sapphire braces. Only classic metal braces can be cheaper than caps.
  • Aligning the teeth with mouth guards is a very comfortable method of treatment, since they can always be removed: before eating, hygiene procedures, etc. There is no pain during treatment, and the patient does not need to constantly visit the dentist for correction.

Indications for the use of aligners

Orthodontic braces are suitable for those who cannot wear braces due to allergic reactions to metal. Most of the aligners are used to correct minor defects, but Invisalign aligners will help to cope with absolutely any defects.

The main indications for treatment with aligners:

  • crowded teeth;
  • large interdental spaces;
  • chin pushed forward or backward;
  • a tooth rotated around its axis;
  • displacement of the jaws forward, backward, sideways relative to each other;
  • consolidation of results after treatment with braces.

Types of bites that aligners help correct:

  • Open. In this case, the lateral or anterior teeth do not close, as a result of which a characteristic gap is formed. The characteristic signs of such a bite are: a slightly open mouth, facial asymmetry, speech defects, and discomfort while eating.
  • Cross. Displacement of the lower jaw in relation to the upper. Typical signs: a person chews on one side, an increased risk of periodontal disease and other gum disease, migraine-like pain.
  • Mesial. The lower teeth protrude forward. This type of bite is also associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease. Difficulties arise in alignment and prosthetics.
  • Deep. The incisors of the upper jaw overlap the incisors of the lower jaw. With a deep bite, teeth can wear out or break, there are painful sensations in the jaw, and the risk of periodontal disease is high.

Aligners are not used in the following cases:

  • 1
    tartar;
  • 2
    acute periodontal disease;
  • 3
    severe neurological diseases;
  • 4
    unerupted teeth.

Types of aligners

All existing aligners can be conditionally divided into several categories depending on the manufacturing method:

  • 1
    Individual. They are made for each patient individually based on a three-dimensional model of the jaw. The most effective treatment.
  • 2
    Thermoplastic. They are made of a material that becomes plastic in hot water. The heated mouthguard is put on the teeth, where it cools down and takes the required shape.

Based on the material used: silicone or bioplastic. The materials are very similar in their characteristics. Mouth guards from them do not injure teeth and gums, are transparent, hypoallergenic, invisible to others.

By the time of wearing the mouthguards are divided into:

  • 1
    Round the clock. In case of significant defects, it is recommended to wear mouth guards around the clock, which are removed only during hygiene procedures.
  • 2
    Nightly. They are used for minor curvature of the teeth, as well as to consolidate the effect obtained, for example, after treatment with braces. They are worn only during sleep, which is very convenient, but ineffective in case of serious defects.

Treatment with aligners

The first step to treatment with aligners is an examination by an orthodontist. The doctor will conduct an examination, determine the appropriateness of wearing them. With the help of a special material, an impression of the dentition is made, on the basis of which a three-dimensional digital model is created, an individual design will be made from it.

How long does the treatment with the mouthguard take? It depends on the severity of the identified violations, but on average they are worn less than braces – from 8 months to 2 years. You should not be intimidated by such a long period of treatment, since they are very comfortable. Unlike braces, aligners do not injure soft tissue. They get used to them almost immediately – after 30 minutes the patient forgets about their existence.

Braces can really cause discomfort in the early days, but aligners do not cause any unpleasant sensations. Sometimes patients report that they are not comfortable speaking. The aligners are invisible and very thin, but they still make the dentition somewhat thicker, and you need to get used to it. However, most patients do not notice any changes.

It is very easy to care for aligners. To do this, it is enough to rinse them daily with water and brush them with a toothbrush. Do not use too hot water, as it can deform the mouth guard under its influence. It is necessary to clean the structure even if it looks perfectly clean – bacteria accumulate on its surface, which can harm the teeth and gums. Those who have dealt with braces know how problematic it is to brush your teeth after eating. In the case of mouth guards, everything is much easier – just take them off and brush your teeth as usual.

How are mouth guards installed?

Just a few simple steps separate you from the perfect smile:

  • You undergo a small examination, the orthodontist makes a plaster model of the jaw, draws up a treatment plan.
  • Using 3D computer modeling technologies, specialists make individual mouthguards.
  • At the next appointment, the doctor places a mouthguard in the patient’s mouth, tells how to take care of the oral cavity and plates.
  • After 2-3 weeks, the patient visits a doctor to monitor the changes taking place. If necessary, the old aligner is replaced with a new one – with a greater degree of impact on problem areas.

How to care for mouth guards?

As we mentioned above, it is much easier to care for aligners, unlike braces:

  • you need to take out the aligner before each meal;
  • rinse the plates daily with warm water;
  • the structure should be stored in a special box in which openings for air access are provided;
  • chewing gum should be discarded during treatment;
  • oral hygiene needs to be stricter, but in general everything remains the same: you need to brush your teeth twice a day, rinse your mouth after snacks, use floss.
